There are times when you may find yourself unable to move the mouse cursor on your laptop's touchpad and scrolling doesn't work, which could be a touchpad failure. However, you need firstly check if your HP laptop is frozen and if all the system has been locked up. Before we start, check if your operating system functions well by pressing the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys and seeing if the Task Manager opens. If it does, then your laptop is not frozen and you can proceed with the methods below. If it doesn't, then you may need to force restart your laptop by holding down the power button for a few seconds.

Method 1: Unplug external mouse

Step 1: Enter Device Manager in the search bar and open it.

Step 2: Expand the Mice and other pointing devices category and find your external mouse device .

Step 3: Right-click on it and select Disable device. Then Click on Yes for confirmation.


Now you can unplug your external mouse from your laptop and check if your touchpad works.

Method 2: Check if the touchpad settings is enabled

Step 1: Press Windows+ I to open Settings.

Step 2: Select Devices >Touchpad. Make sure that the toggle switch under Touchpad is on.

You may adjust the touchpad sensitivity and other options as you like.

Method 3: Run the hardware troubleshooter

If the touchpad settings are enabled but the touchpad is still not working, you can try running the hardware troubleshooter to detect and fix any hardware issues.

Step 1: Press Windows+R to open Run dialog, enter msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic in the box and press Enter.

Step 2: Click on Next and wait for it to scan your laptop for any hardware issues.


Follow the on-screen instructions to fix any detected problems.

Method 4: Enable the touchpad in BIOS

Sometimes, the touchpad may be disabled in the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), which is a firmware that controls the hardware settings of your laptop. Here are the steps to do this:

Step 1: Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly during the boot process until you see a screen that says "Entering Setup" or something similar.

Step 2: Use the arrow keys to navigate to the Advanced tab at the top of the screen.

Step 3: Use the arrow keys to select Built-in Device Options and press Enter.

Step 4: Use the arrow keys to select Touchpad and press Enter.

Step 5: Make sure that Touchpad is enabled (it should say Enabled next to it).

Step 6: Press F10 to save and exit. Then hit Enter to confirm.
