Fix 1. Run Bootrec (bootrec.exe) to Troubleshoot the Issue

Bootrec is a utility provided by Microsoft in Windows Recovery Environment (also known as Windows RE). It is useful to fix the issues which prevent computers from booting normally. It is available for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. To run it, follow the steps below.

Step 1. Restart your computer by using the computer's power button.

Step 2. If there is a single operating system installed on your computer, press F8 when the Windows logo appears. If there are more than one operating system installed on your computer, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair at first. And then press F8 when the Windows logo appears.

Step 3. Select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Step 4. Select Command Prompt from the pop-up System Recovery Options menu.

Step 5. When the Command Prompt opens, execute the following commands one by one:

  • bootrec /fixmbr

  • bootrec /fixboot

Step 6. When the commands are executed successfully, reboot your computer.

After the reboot, if the “Windows cannot repair this computer automatically” issue still exists, go ahead and try the following methods.

Fix 2. Run CHKDSK to Address the Issue

As mentioned above, the damaged hard drive and bad sectors can also lead to the “Windows cannot repair this computer automatically” error. In this case, running CHKDSK can help address the issue. Do as follows.

Step 1. Restart your computer and press F8 when the Windows logo appears.

Step 2. Select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Step 3. Select Command Prompt from the pop-up System Recovery Options menu.

Step 4. Type the “chkdsk /r” command into the Command Prompt and hit Enter to run it.

Fix 3. Run System File Checker to Resolve the Issue

This method can be useful if the “Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically” issue is caused by corrupted system files. Take the following steps.

Step 1. Restart your computer and press F8 when the Windows logo appears.

Step 2. Select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Step 3. Select Command Prompt from the pop-up System Recovery Options menu.

Step 4. When the Command Prompt opens, type “sfc /scannow” into it and hit Enter to run the command.

Step 5. After the process is finished, restart your computer.
