Add Disk Space by Double-shrink Hiberfil.sys on Windows

Jun. 24, 2022 / Updated by Helia to Windows Driver Solutions

Many Windows users often hibernate their laptops or desktops, which can save the power and help to resume their work when they turn the PCs back on. However, Windows hibernation mode takes up large disk space, especially Windows 10 hibernate, whose hiberfil.sys file size could be several gigabytes.

If you own a laptop or tablet with small RAM, like Dell Inspiron 11 3000 Series, Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-11, HP 250 G4, etc. with just 6GB or 8 GB RAM and small drive space, you may find that the hiberfil.sys file on the C Drive takes up about 6GB disk space (8 GB RAM).

Why Does Hiberfil.sys File Take up Large Disk Space

It is default settings on Windows 7 and higher Windows OS that the hiberfil.sys file size should occupy 75% space of the RAM when the PC is in the hibernation mode.

You could check the hiberfil.sys file size by the method below:

Look up Hiberfil.sys File in File Explorer

Here we take Windows 7 as an example to show you the steps to check the hiberfil.sys file size.

Step 1: Use Windows shortcut keys Win + E to open the File Explorer.

Step 2: Choose Local Disk C and type hiberfil.sys into the search box to do the search.

Step 3: Right click the hiberfil.sys file and select Properties to check the file size. Or you could check the file in Details view.

As you could see from the picture above, the hiberfil.sys file takes up quite large room on the C drive. So today we will introduce to you how to add disk space by double-shrink hiberfil.sys on Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and other common Windows OS.

How to Add Disk Space by Double-shrink Hiberfil.sys on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7

It is important to increase space to C drive on Windows, and you could manage this by shrinking the hiberfil.sys twice.

Shrink the Hiberfil.sys File in Command Prompt

This will reduce hibernation file and increase disk space on windows.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

1) Windows 7:

Search cmd in the Start menu, and then right click the item and select Run as Administrator.

2) Windows 8, 10:

Use Windows shortcut keys Win +X and select Command Prompt (Admin).

Step 2: Type powercfg hibernate size nn into the dialog box and press Enter. (The nn is the desired hiberfile.sys size in percentage of the total memory between 50 % and 100 %, defaulted 75%, and you could type, for example, 60.)

Shrink the Hiberfil.sys File Again in the Properties

Locate the hiberfil.sys file on the C drive and follow the steps to shrink the file again to add disk space.

Step 1: Right click the hiberfil.sys and select Properties.

Step 2: Click the button Advanced.

Step 3: Check the Compress contents to save disk space in the pop-up dialog.

Besides, you could also disable the Hibernate mode to reduce the system footprint.

Disable Hibernate Mode to Increase Disk Space on Windows

Step 1: Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

Step 2: Type powercfg -h off into the dialog box and press Enter.

Step 3: Restart the computer.

You will find the hiberfil.sys file has been removed from the system and the Hibernate option is gone, which really increase space to the C drive. If you want to restore the hibernation feature, do type powercfg -h on into the dialog box.

Note: Don’t specify the hiberfile size too small in case the blue screen of death (BSoD error), aka STOP 0x000000A0 INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR, appears out of your expectation.

Before you shrink hiberfil.sys file to increase the disk space, it is highly recommended to back up important programs, for example, the drivers, in case system issues like ghost touch screen,Windows 10 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error, mouse and keyboard not working, etc. and to create a system restore point before any changes you conduct on Windows OS.

You could use driver backup and restore utilities like Driver Talent, Driver Easy, etc. to back up the important drivers on your PC in case sudden system crashes happen in the double-shrink hiberfil.sys process. If you have no such utilities, click the button to get one.
