Fix 100% Disk Usage after the Windows 10 Creators Update

Jun. 24, 2022 / Updated by Helia to Windows 10

Nobody enjoys a computer stuck on the Windows 10 100% disk usage after the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update/Creators Update, but this high disk usage problem stops many Windows users from the continuity of their office work on desktops or laptops. Though the Creators Update (v1703) comes with amazing features, the new update also causes some big headaches, like no WiFi available, black screen, endless reboot loop, etc. In this case, during the using of the laptop or desktop, you may receive a notification asking you to close programs because of the low on memory or the 100% disk usage.

Then you find in Task Manager there is a red 100% marking on the Disk or the Memory, but in fact, you just open a PDF or browse a website your computer.

Top 3 Ways to Solve 100% Disk Usage on Your Windows 10 Fall Creators Update/Creators Update PC

Here we’ve had top 3 solutions to fix this high disk usage problem on your Windows 10 Fall Creators Update/Creators Update computer. Go on the reading and try the methods.

Way 1: Disable or Delay Start the Windows Services

You can disable the Windows services Superfetch, HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider, Windows Search in Services and solve the Windows 10 100% disk usage issue. The Superfetch helps to pre-load the programs you often use into the memory. But if you don't use some of the programs after turning on the PC, it will still take up a high percentage of the disk. Also, the HomeGroup services can result in the high workload of the disk and the CPU and slow down the system running. If you seldom use such Windows services, it is better to disable them and fix the 100% disk usage.

1. Use Windows shortcut keysWin + R to launch Run.
2. Type services.msc and press the Enter.
3. Locate to the Superfetch.
4. Double click the Superfetch service for Properties.
5. Select Automatic (Delay Start) from the drop-down menu of Startup type.

6. Double click the HomeGroup Listener, the HomeGroup Provider and the Windows Search.
5. Select Disable from the drop-down menu of Startup type.

Way 2: Disable Message Signaled Interrupt Mode in the Registry

Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) is an alternative to line-based interrupts. The Windows 10 100% disk usage problem occurs when MSI mode is enabled because if the Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express (AHCI PCIe) models run with the inbox storahci.sys driver, the disk drive may try device resets after the unresponsive or lag input/output. It’s no need to learn about details of such complex PC knowledge when coming with the problem, but you can still solve the high disk size problem via disabling the mode:

1. Go to the Device Manager and make sure there's the inbox AHCI driver, storahci.sys, in Driver Details of the Standard SATA AHCI ControllerProperties.

2. Go to the Details tab and select Device Instance Path from the drop-down menu of the Property. 3. Check the value and copy it with the right-click. For example, we have the value: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E03&SUBSYS_08061025&REV_04\3&11583659&0&FA.
4. Use Windows shortcut keys Win + R to launch the Run.
5. Type regedit and press the Enter.
6. In the Registry Editor, follow the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\Value\Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties

(Note:Value refers to the Device Instance Path you copied in step 3.)

7. Double click the MSISupported on the right side. 8. Change the Value data to 0.
9. Click OK.
10. Restart the computer to make the change take effect.
